From padi field to knowledge farm
SARAWAK’S Bidayuh community put on a colourful showcase of their culture and traditions in the inaugural Pesta Birumuh (Farming Festival) in Serian, near Kuching, recently. The festival kicked off with the preliminary rounds of the Battle of the Bands and Bidayuh Idol singing contest and sports. It culminated in a three-day gala at the Serian Mini Stadium which included the grand opening ceremony on March 21. According to organising chairman Datuk Wilson Baya Dandot, birumuh means farming in Bidayuh and is usually associated with planting rice. However, as the Bidayuhs achieved progress and modernisation over the years, it also came to mean gaining education and knowledge, he said. This was reflected in the festival’s theme, “From the Padi Field to the Knowledge Farm”. More >>


Bidayuhs in fiesta
Months of hard work culminated in a grand spectacle for the Bidayuhs yesterday in Serian town. In a blaze of colour, gaiety and ceremony, they strutted their stuff to show off their first ever Pesta Birumuh (Farming Festival). True to their character, they made sure that members of other races also shared in the event. And so together, the resulting 16 contingents paraded during the opening ceremony. Minister-in-charge of the festival, Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong was obviously tickled pink and organising chairman Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot was all smiles during the event. More >>


CM: Opposition only good at criticising, making promises
SERIAN: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday described the opposition as “hot air politicians” because they are only good in criticising and making promises, but do not have solid programmes and actions to help the people. As such, he urged the people not to listen to the opposition. Taib pointed out that the opposition were instigators who could only talk, but were unable to bring transformation to the people. KUCHING: The Bidayuh community will celebrate its inaugural ‘Pesta Berumuh’ (Farming Fiesta) on March 21 at Serian Mini Stadium to showcase its rich cultural heritage, said chairman of the organising committee, Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot.
