DBNA BIDAYUH ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION


1.0 PREAMBLE

This proposal is submitted by the DBNA Education Committee to the DBNA CEC/President on the proposed Essay Writing Competition. This proposal will be one of the activities to be carried out by the DBNA Education Committee which will commence in September and October 2000. The essay writing competition was one of the activities discussed during the committee meeting held in March 2000. In the meeting two names were proposed to spear head this committee; Mr. Yunus Apok, as an Organising Charman and will be assisted by Ms. Flowrese William. The purpose of the essay writing competition is to allow Bidayuhs to write in their own mother tongue. The eventual winners of the competition will have their essays published in the form of books and CD-ROM which will be presented to the winners.



2.0 OBJECTIVES

Listed below are some of the major objectives of the Essay Writing Competition:

To enable the Bidayuh to write in their own mother tongue

To nurture the richness of the diverse Bidayuh dialects

To promote the use of Bidayuh dialects in literature

To assist in the enhancement and eventually the teaching of Bidayuh dialects among the Bidayuh

To provide policy guidelines in achieving Bidayuh unity



3.0 THEME FOR THE COMPETITION

The theme entitled "Towards a Progressive and United Bidayuh Society" has been chosen as the theme for this essay writing competition.



4.0 ORGANISING COMMITTEE

In order for this activity to be carried out smoothly. It is suggested that Mr. Yunus Apok be appointed to be the Chairman of the committee and Ms. Flowrese William to be the Secretary of the Committee. In addition, the following working committee has been to be appointed during its meeting on 19 August 2000. Details on the running of the competition will be drawn by the Organising Committee



5.0 COMMITTEE OF JUDGES

The following names have agreed to be the judges for the competition according to the four major Bidayuh dialects.

6.0 PRIZES FOR THE COMPETITION

The committee proposed that prices shall be given to the first three winners and to other five consolation prizes. All prizes shall be in the form of cash, certificate of participation (to be signed by the Chairman of the Organising Committee and the President) and a book (a collections of essays which will be published) which will be handed to the winners and a separate occasion probably during a dinner organised by the DBNA CEC. All prizes, certificates and publication of the essay shall be sponsored. The committee hopes that Y.B. President would kindly assist to source sponsors for this project based on the budget append below. Alternatively, the committee suggested that the sum should be either be incurred by the DBNA CEC or through other sources such as the UDUNG BIDAYUH.

7.0 RULES AND REGULATION OF THE COMPETITION

Append below are some of the GUIDELINES which all participant of the competition need to adhere to:

7.1 The competition shall be OPEN to all Bidayuhs regardless on their place or residence;

7.2 The Essay need to be written in either four of the major Bidayuh dialects namely; Bau-Jagoi, Biatah, Bukar-Sadong, and Selako-Lara;

7.3 Any source of reference in the text should be acknowledged and anyone form of plagrism shall be penalized. The thought in your essay should be original and has never been published before;

7.4 The length of the essay shall be not more or less 2,500 to 3,000 words, typed in "Microsoft Words" in double spacing and "Arial font 12";

7.5 The essay need to be written in an academic manner, which should include the INTRODUCTION, the main body which should be divided into HEADINGS and SUB-HEADINGS, and CONCLUSIONS which should be typed in LETTERS and BOLD, and accompanied by a list of references or bibliography;

7.6 Both hard and soft copy of the essay should be submitted either to: THE ORGANISING CHAIRMAN, BIDAYUH ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION, c/o DBNA Headquarters, Jalan Ong Tiang, Swee, or email to MR. AHI SAROK at email address (sahi@fss.unimas.my) and MR. WILLIAM NYIGOR at email address (LIAM@sains.com.my);

7.7 Participants should write their full name, NRIC number, and their contact address on the COVER of the essay;

7.8 Participants should submit their essay as stated on rule no. 7.6 either on or before the 30th November 2000; and

7.9 No participant should protest against the decision of the judges and the decision of the judges is final.



8.0 EXPECTED OUTCOME OF THE COMPETITION

Apart from adjudging and picking the three best essays and another five consolation prizes. All the essays which won the prizes will be published and printed in a book to be edited by the DBNA Committee. According to the budget about 150 copies of this book will printed. Eight copies will be given as complimentary copies to the winners, a copy each to the sponsors and eight copies to the eight judges named under 5.0. In the event of extra funding or sponsorship, all the winning essays will be stored in CD-ROMS. The remaining copies will be sold to members of DBNA throughout the State at a price higher than the cost of printing. If the cost of printing is RM20.00 per copy, than the cost per book will be either RM25.00 or RM30.00 subject to the approval of the Education Committee. With the publication of the book written in Bidayuh, it will add to the scare literature written in Bidayuh. It is hope that this initial effort to promote the use of Bidayuh dialects in writing will be further nurtured. It is also hope that any keen and prolific Bidayuh writers will join the competition and express their views freely in their own dialects.
