Bara JABBERS round the world,
I would like to share a disturbing phenomenon in PrahokLand brought about by the return of peace and the openings of its door to the world and partly due to globalization.
If you visit any big restaurants in big cities of PrahokLand for lunch and dinner, you will be swarmed by those PYT/SYT (pinjam from Pape Gabuk) beer girls greeting you and pleading you to drink their brand of beers. We have Tiger Bijurak, Carlsberg, Fosters, VB, Heineken, Angkor beer, Crown, ABC Stout, Guiness stout, Tsingtao, Stella Artois, Budweiser and dizzying variety of international beers and wines. It is so confusing and irritating that many foreigners and first-timers to Prahokland find it strange and disturbing too. In the end, our trick to end this torture is by telling them that you want to drink plain water and whoosh... they are all gone in a jiffy and try to attack another table again. Some might show their sour but pretty faces but some will linger on in hoping to close a deal. Finally, after they are gone then the waiter/waitress will come to take your order!!
You may wonder why this happen and back home you hardly see any beer girl or here they are called as "promotion girl".. (promote what??).
- Poverty & Debt: Most of these young ladies parents are in debt due to poor harvest, gambling or other misfortunes and they have to support their parents. With no education , the only work they can find is in the garment factories in the capital and beer girls. Being a beer girl means putting on nice, body-hugging cloth, nice make-up, high-heel shoes (they can't walk properly in them),transport to pick and send them home and commission based on the sales for the day/night.
With base salaries of almosr zero and more typically running from USD20-00 to USD60-00 a month, the girls depends heavily on commissions typically from USD2-3 per case of beer sold. And refusing a client's advances can tantamount to losing a sale, they say.
Untold thousands of beer girls ply their trade in PrahokLand, Vietnam and other part of South East Asia. In the vast world of PrahokLand sex work, experts say beer girls are the royalty. Initially these innocent young girls resisted the advances of drunk customers/drinkers but with the dire situation they are in and the mearge take-home commission, they often more than not ended up sleeping with the customers. Some can be seen being groped, fondled, treated rudely by drunkards and propositioned for sex. Not all beer girls can resist the temptation of uncle Sam/Greenbacks.An increasing number of them are selling sex with beer and one-fifth are infected with HIV, government surveys show. AIDS workers are now starting to focus on the girl's role in the epidemic and challenging the major liquor companies that employ the girls to take responsibility for their health and working conditions.
Beer girls are thought to be a lot cleaner than other sex-workers and by this mind-set, they are most vulnerable to HIV. Government surveys show that they are less likely than brothel workers to make their men wear condoms. The clients tend to develop more of a "sweetheart"relationship with these girls and there is thought to be a relationship of trust. In the traditional society such as PrahokLand, beer girls still carry a stigma. Respectable girls wear sarong or conservative clothings, go home early and are rarely seen touching their boyfriends or husbands in public. Beer girls work late, wear mini-skirt, thick make-up like ICI paint-job on Rex cinema !! and flirt openly with their clients to keep the piin bateri flowing.
Some of the beer/liquor companies forbid their promotion girls from activities that might lead to sex but this is ineffective when beer girls are are working on commission. These girls have to do something to convince the clients to buy. The companies are acting with one eye open and the other eye closed.
It's a sad thing that happen to these young girls but such is the dire economic situation here that they got no other choices. But many NGOs and the government are working very hard to slowly put a stop to it. The beer companies who are mostly foreigners have their own strict policies back home on sexual harrasment. Most of the beer girls do not work, however, directly for the beer companies, but for locally-based distributors and exporters. That's why it is diffucult for them too.
Sometimes, we wonder and hope that one day PrahokLand bars and beer gardens are run more like legitimate gentleman's pub/clubs in the West, where men are free to look see/oggle and chat with the girls but a grope or rude comments is grounds for ejection or even arrest and the bouncers will be busy and sweating too!!.
So guy, when you ever visit PrahokLand, please be guided accordingly !!!. But anyway, what is PrahokLand without all the stuffs like motodops, Prahok, Orange Ladies, Promotion Girls, Chix-soup with Ganja, deep-fried cicadas, grasshoppers or spiders, ox-cart drivers of expats staff and host of other things unimaginable and unsangkarable back home...and Hammock mentality..Putin pilots, Keeper of 41 sticks....
Have a Prahoktic weekend to all... Adios amigos..SS
